Snelling woman, 67, killed in Merced Falls Road rollover collision identified

The Merced County Sheriff Coroner’s Office has identified the woman killed in Thursday’s crash near Snelling as 67-year-old Janet Carroll, of Snelling.

Officers were dispatched to the scene of the crash located on Merced Falls Road, between La Grange Road and Hornitos Road, at about 2:33 p.m. Thursday, according to Officer Eric Zuniga.

Authorities said William Carroll, 81, of Snelling, was driving a 2000 Suzuki Vitara eastbound on Merced Falls Road, east of La Grange Road at about 40 mph when for unknown reasons, the vehicle drifted onto the south shoulder.

Zuniga said the driver attempted to steer back onto the roadway and the vehicle crossed both lanes of traffic before overturning several times off the north shoulder of the road, resulting in his wife being ejected from the vehicle. Authorities said she was not wearing a seat belt.

Zuniga said officers arrived to find paramedics performing CPR and the woman was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the vehicle suffered minor injuries and was not transported.

According to Zuniga, neither drugs nor alcohol appear to be a factor in he crash.
