Pedestrian struck and killed by driver on Highway 59 near El Nido, CHP says

Authorities are investigating a traffic collision that killed a pedestrian Tuesday evening on Highway 59 south of El Nido, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Officers responded to the area of East Jefferson Road and Highway 59 just after 10:30 p.m., according to Officer Eric Zuniga.

According to authorities, 24-year-old Alyssa Ann Arballo of Los Banos, was driving southbound on Highway 59 south of East Jefferson Road in a 2016 Nissan Sentra. A 26-year-old male pedestrian from San Jose, then entered the southbound lane and was struck by her vehicle.

After striking the pedestrian, the driver lost control of the vehicle and collided with a nearby utility pole, Zuniga said. Authorities said the pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to Zuniga, authorities believe the pedestrian who was struck and killed had previously been a passenger in another vehicle that had stopped on the side of the road, in order to allow the man to urinate and smoke a cigarette.

The vehicle the pedestrian had previously been riding in initially left the scene of the crash for unknown reasons, but later returned, according to CHP.

The driver of the Nissan left the scene on foot to report the collision from a nearby home before returning and cooperating with officers.

The driver of the Nissan did not appear to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the collision, Zuniga said.

The crash remains under investigation.
