Passenger killed in Highway 33 crash near Gustine, CHP says
A passenger was killed Wednesday in a two-vehicle collision on Highway 33 near the southern edge of Gustine, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Los Banos CHP officers responded to the collision on Highway 33 near Sullivan Road at about 4:25 p.m. according to Officer Shannon Stiers.
According to Stiers, 23-year-old Lisa Chavez, of San Jose, was driving a 1996 Acura Integra northbound on Highway 33 with a 26-year-old male passenger, also of San Jose, located in the front passenger seat of the vehicle.
Stiers said Chavez attempted to make a left turn onto Sullivan Road and for unknown reasons, turned directly in front of a 2017 Nissan Sentra traveling southbound at an unknown speed driven by Luis Cruz, 25, of Santa Nella.
Authorities said the Sentra impacted the passenger side door of the Integra. The passenger was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Stiers.
Chavez was taken by ambulance to Los Banos Memorial Hospital with complaint of pain while Cruz did not report any injuries, according to the CHP.
Stiers said occupants in both vehicles were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash.
Neither drugs nor alcohol appear to be a factor in the collision, according to the CHP.
Authorities said the crash remains under investigation.
