Solo vehicle crash on Motel Drive kills woman, Merced police say

A woman was killed in a solo-vehicle crash Sunday evening in the 1100 block of Motel Drive near Merced Avenue, according to Merced Police Sgt. Dan Dabney.

The 20-year-old woman was driving a red Mazda 6 sedan around 7:45 p.m. eastbound on Motel Drive.

Police said it appears the driver was likely traveling at a high rate of speed and lost control of the vehicle, crashing into a small dirt canal off the south shoulder of the roadway. The vehicle partially overturned.

The driver was partially ejected from the vehicle. She was pronounced dead at the scene by Riggs Ambulance Service personnel. Her identity has not been released, pending notification of family or next-of-kin.
