Fire burns RV, residence off East Childs Avenue and G Street in Merced

No injuries were reported in a structure fire Thursday afternoon off East Childs Avenue and G Street in Merced.

The Merced City Fire Department responded to a call of an RV fire at 12:25 p.m. Upon arriving on the scene, firefighters upgraded the call to a structure fire when flames approached a studio apartment in the rear of the residence at 122 East Childs Ave.

“There was an RV that was fully engulfed and it was transitioning into a structure,” said Battalion Chief Shawn Luce.

“Additional resources had already been ordered. When they arrived, we made a quick attack. We were able to get another unit. Once they got on scene we did quick search of the occupancy to make sure we didn’t have any victims or anybody trapped.”

Luce said firefighters were able to stop forward progress of the fire relatively quickly and minimize the damage to the structure. The RV was destroyed. A Chevy Impala was also damaged by the fire along with other items that were close to the RV.

According to Luce, there were four fire engines on the scene to help battle the blaze.

Calfire/Merced County Fire Department also arrived on scene and will oversee the fire investigation.

The blaze took about 25 minutes to get under control, according to Luce.

The cause remains under investigation.
