Restored Mainzer Theater on track for August opening in downtown Merced
The recently restored Mainzer Theater in downtown Merced is on schedule for an August opening, bringing with it new jobs to the City of Merced.
The historic theater on Main Street is set to offer several dining and entertainment amenities, mandating the need for more than 20 staffing positions to be filled in preparation for the planned opening next month, a Malen Yantis Public Relation news release said.
Coronavirus-related delays are not anticipated to affect projected opening dates, a spokesperson told the Sun-Star.
A local hallmark with a fresh face lift, the Mainzer’s beautification has been touted as an emblem of Merced being a “city on the rise.” Along with the El Capitan Hotel and Hotel Tioga, city leaders point to the reinvestment in vacant or run down gems littering Merced’s Main Street as projects transforming projects the city.
The Mainzer and El Capitan are both managed by the Hyatt Hotels Corporation under San Francisco-based brand Joie de Vivre, which has “boutique brand” hotels throughout the country.
“Driven by Hyatt’s purpose to care for people so they can be their best, we are excited to care for our community by bringing employment opportunities to Merced with the opening of Mainzer,” said Robin Donovan, managing director of Mainzer, El Capitan Hotel and The Tioga.
Positions open at the Mainzer initially include bartenders, waitstaff and cashiers.
The Mainzer’s restaurant will include both indoor and outdoor seating for dining, and feature a craft beer selection.
Later this year, the theater’s performance and event space, as well as a movie theater, is on track to open. Performances include theater, live music and speakers.
Further jobs will become available as the company prepares to open the El Capitan.
“In the coming months we’ll also be looking to fill more than 100 positions with the opening of El Capitan, a Joie De Vivre Hotel, which is slated for opening in late 2020,” Donovan said.
The additional employment opportunities is good news for the City of Merced, as the pandemic wreaked havoc on local jobs over the last few months and rocketed unemployment to Great Recession levels.
A current list of job openings and online application is available on the Hyatt Careers website.
Employees of Mainzer and El Capitan will have access to health, dental, vision and life insurance programs, paid holidays, sick pay, flexible work hours and paid time off for approved community impact projects. Staff also receives daily meals during shifts and uniforms including shoes.
The El Capitan Hotel is expected to open this fall with 114 guest rooms. One wing is historically preserved and another is newly constructed. The hotel includes three dining options and more than 3,000 square feet of meeting and event space.
