Big rig overturns, catches fire on Highway 152, west of Los Banos, CHP says

12:30 p.m. Monday update:

According to CHP Officer Shannon Stiers, Highway 152 along the Pacheco Pass is closed in both directions between Highway 33 and Dinosaur Point Road, as the California Department of Transportation, Cal Fire and CHP crews continue to work the scene of an overturned big rig that caught fire Monday morning.

Stiers said Cal Fire crews are working to extinguish debris from the big rig which was hauling paper and plastic products.

According to Stiers, the closure may soon be moved from Highway 33 closer to the O’Neill Forebay to allow for access in and out of the area.

Stiers said it is unknown at this time what caused the big rig traveling eastbound on Highway 152 to overturn and catch fire. According to the CHP, no injuries have been reported.

Authorities said the section of roadway may be closed until about 5 p.m.. and motorists should avoid the area.

The California Highway Patrol is on scene of a traffic collision involving an overturned big rig in the area of Highway 152 and Upper Cottonwood Creek, west of Los Banos, according to the California Highway Patrol Traffic Incident Information Page.

According to the CHP website, officers responded to the scene shortly before 8 a.m..

According to a CHP Facebook post, the crash resulted in fire on both the north and south shoulders with smoke blowing across lanes.
