Vegetation fire on west side of Merced County has burned nearly 800 acres, say firefighters

Firefighters since Monday morning have been battling a vegetation fire that’s burning west of Santa Nella near Highway 152 and the Romero Visitors Center in Merced County.

The Cal Fire Madera-Mariposa-Merced Unit responded to the Cottonwood Fire after being called at 7:55 a.m. Monday.

The blaze has burned 788 acres and is 50 percent contained and no structures threatened, according to Cal Fire.

Twelve engines, two water tankers and two hand crews are being used to fight the fire.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
