Pedestrian dies after being struck by car in south Merced

A pedestrian died early Tuesday morning after being struck by a vehicle in the 1100 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Way in south Merced, police reported.

Officers responded to the scene just after midnight and found the victim in the No. 2 southbound lane of Martin Luther King Jr. Way, according to the department’s Facebook page.

Police said the driver stopped and is cooperating with officers. DUI does not appear to be a factor.

The pedestrian was crossing Martin Luther King Jr. Way westbound in the middle of the 1100 block.

The vehicle, which was traveling southbound, struck the pedestrian in the No. 2 lane, causing the pedestrian to be pulled under the vehicle, police said.

The pedestrian was not carrying identification, and that person’s name has not been released.

Police are asking anyone with information to contact the traffic division at (209) 388-7719.
