Merced firefighters lift spirits of boy battling cancer by making special house visit
Firefighters from Merced County Cal Fire and the Merced Fire Department earlier this week made a special visit to a 6-year old boy who is terminally ill with cancer.
Three fire engines showed up at the home of Matt and Anna Richrdson on Monday with their lights and sirens going to visit their son David Richardson, who is suffering from neuroblastoma, which is a type of cancer that attacks the whole body.
From a young age David wanted to be a firefighter.
“I think it’s firefighters having bravery that he liked,” Anna said. “They run into burning buildings to save people. He was fascinated with fire trucks and everything about them.”
David’s was originally diagnosed with cancer in January 2017. He had a second relapse in August of this year. On Sept. 14, his parents brought him home from Valley Children’s Hospital to be with his family.
The visit from the firefighters was organized by David’s hospice doctor.
“It’s a hard time for the boy and his family’s life right now,” said Merced Fire Deputy Chief Tom England. “We were thankful to be part of his wish. We’re fortunate we’re in a profession that is sought out and respected.”
Eight firefighters showed up from the two departments.
David was unable to go outside, so a few of the firefighters went in to present David with his own fire turnout gear — including a jacket with his name on the back, pants, boots and a helmet.
The firefighters also had a message for David.
“They wanted David to know he’s extremely brave,” Anna said. “They told him he’s an amazing young boy and they are very proud of him. They appreciated the support he gave them and the love he has for the fire department.”
The family was touched by the gesture of the fire departments.
“It was amazing,” Anna said. “It lifted our spirits a bit. David always wanted to be a firefighter growing up. His 8-year old brother enjoyed it.”
