A male pedestrian was transported to a hospital with injuries Sunday, after being struck by a vehicle in Merced, according to police.

At about 6:57 p.m., officers responded to the area of R and 18th streets for a reported vehicle versus pedestrian traffic collision, according to spokeswoman Lt. Emily Foster.

Police said a woman was driving a vehicle north on R Street when the front of the vehicle struck the man in the middle of the roadway. According to Foster, witnesses reported the pedestrian had been jumping in and out of the roadway prior to the collision.

Police have not been able to identify the man, who was transported to a Modesto-area hospital with injuries. According to Foster, the man remains in critical condition.

The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene and was cooperative with authorities. According to Foster, DUI does not appear to be a factor in the collision.
