Pedestrian and dog die after being struck by a car in Merced, police say

A 44-year man and his dog were struck by a car and killed Friday night in Merced, according to police.

Officers responded to the incident about 5:42 p.m. in the area of Yosemite Parkway and Almond Avenue, according to Lt. Emily Foster.

According to Foster, the pedestrian and the dog were crossing Yosemite Parkway when they were struck by a Ford Focus driven by a 20-year woman. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with police. Neither alcohol nor drugs are believed to have played a factor.

It’s unclear if the pedestrian was legally crossing the road.
