A pedestrian was taken to the hospital Wednesday after he was struck by a vehicle while trying to cross a freeway on-ramp in Merced, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Officers respond at 4:05 p.m. to the area of westbound Highway 140 and the northbound Highway 99 on-ramp, according to CHP Officer Eric Zuniga.

The driver was entering the Highway 99 on-ramp from westbuond Highway 140 in a 2006 Ford F-150 about 30 mph, when the vehicle struck Joey Guerrero, 33, of Fresno, said CHP.

According to Zuniga, Guerrero was wearing dark clothing and walking across the on-ramp at the time of the collision. Authorities said the driver was not able to see the pedestrian.

“He was unable to stop,” said Zuniga.

According to the CHP, Guerrero was transported to Mercy Medical Center in Merced with a broken leg.

The driver remained on scene and cooperated with officers.

Neither drugs nor alcohol are suspected as a factor in the collision, which remains under investigation, the CHP said.
