Pedestrian killed after being hit by truck in Winton in Merced County, says CHP
A 41-year-old pedestrian was killed Monday morning in Winton after being hit by a truck on Almond Avenue between Cypress Avenue and Winton Way, California Highway Patrol reported.
Identified as a man from Atwater, the pedestrian’s name has not been released, pending notification of family or next-of-kin. He had been walking across the street, pushing a shopping cart in low lighting and rain, according to a CHP news release.
Around 6:30 a.m. the driver of a Chevrolet Silverado was traveling eastbound at 25 mph and didn’t see the man, who was wearing dark clothes. CHP Public Information Officer Eric Zuniga said officers tried to save the man’s life, but he died from his injuries.
Officers determined the right front of the truck collided with the man, sending him flying to the south edge of the road on Almond Avenue near the driveway of Frank Sparkes Elementary School.
The driver stopped, stayed at the scene of the accident and fully cooperated with officers, the release said.
Officers don’t believe drugs or alcohol played a role in the accident. Officers urge all drivers to use their windshield wipers and keep their headlights on, Zuniga said Tuesday.
