Two people were killed after being thrown from a motorcycle Wednesday in a crash on Highway 33 in Merced County, just northwest of Los Banos, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The motorcycle and two other vehicles were involved, and CHP said one of the drivers fled the scene.

The 40-year-old man riding a 2007 Suzuki GSXR and his passenger, a 42-year-old woman, were headed south on Highway 33 near Marshall Road about 8:05 a.m., according to CHP.

The driver of a 2015 GMC Sierra in front of the motorcycle slowed to turn into a driveway, and for unknown reasons the motorcycle collided with the back end of the truck. Both the man and woman on the Suzuki were thrown onto the roadway, CHP said.

A big rig pulling a trailer and traveling in the opposite direction attempted to swerve but ran over the motorcycle, and possibly over the man and woman, according to CHP.

The GMC driver was cooperative with officers but the driver of the big rig fled the scene heading north, CHP said.

Both motorcycle riders, who were from Newman, were pronounced dead at the scene, CHP said, and no other injuries were reported.
