The Merced County Sheriff Coroner’s Office has identified a man killed in a collision along Interstate 5 south of Highway 140 in Merced County last week as 23-year-old Jose Robledo of Dos Palos, according to Deputy Daryl Allen.

Los Banos-area officers responded to the collision at about 6:30 a.m. on Feb. 24, according to the California Highway Patrol. Authorities said Robledo was driving a 2013 Volkswagen Passat north on Interstate 5 at about 80-85 mph. Robledo apparently changed lanes and attempted to slow down and stop while approaching a vehicle directly in front of the Volkswagen.

Robledo lost control of the Volkswagen, which traveled onto the right shoulder of the road where it impacted the rear of a 2019 International tractor pulling an enclosed trailer that was parked along the shoulder of the road, according to a CHP news release.

According to the release, Robledo suffered fatal injuries in the collision and was pronounced dead at the scene. Passengers inside the International tractor did not report any injuries.
