Head-on crash with big rig kills two in Merced County, CHP says. The truck hit three cars

Two men from Merced were killed early Tuesday in a crash involving multiple cars and a big rig, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Three sedans were traveling south on Highway 59 about 4:15 a.m. as they approached a 2022 Volvo big rig headed in the other direction near Furtado Road in El Nido, according to officer Eric Zuniga.

For an unknown reason the big rig veered into the oncoming traffic, CHP said, striking the three cars.

A driver, a 33-year-old man, in a 2005 Hyundai Santa Fe and a passenger, a 22-year-old man, in a 2011 Ford Fusion were confirmed dead shortly after officers arrived, CHP said.

A 20-year-old man driving the Ford suffered major injuries and was taken to Memorial Medical Center in Modesto hospital, Zuniga said.

A 54-year-old man from Los Banos also involved in the crash while driving a 2015 Chevrolet Sonic and the 28-year-old man from Kingsburg driving the big rig did not report any injuries, CHP said.

Drugs and alcohol do not appear to be involved in the crash, CHP said. Officers remained on scene as of 8:15 a.m. and were controlling traffic in the area.
