Woman killed after big rig crashes into four vehicles on I-5 near Firebaugh, CHP says

A woman is dead following a collision with a big rig on Intestate 5 near Firebaugh on Saturday afternoon, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Officers responded to the scene of the multiple-vehicle collision at 2:17 p.m. on I-5, just south of the Nees Avenue off-ramp.

The 2016 Freightliner was traveling northbound on I-5 and the driver didn’t see the slowed traffic ahead. The semi-truck rear-ended four vehicles and overturned, CHP said.

“Traffic was slowed from an earlier car fire on the shoulder,” said CHP Sgt. Robert Shaw. “The driver obviously didn’t see the slow traffic. He applied the brakes but he hit four vehicles.”

The first vehicle the truck hit was a 2016 Nissan Murano that had a driver and two passengers. The woman sitting in the right rear passenger seat was killed. Her name was withheld pending notification of next-of-kin.

Other injuries suffered due to the collision were minor, according to Shaw.
