Teenage girl drowns in Madera County lake. She was 25 yards off shore, deputies say

A 13-year-old girl died after drowning in Eastman Lake, the Madera County Sheriff’s Office said on Monday.

The girl was reported missing about 5 p.m. Sunday at the lake, the sheriff’s office said.

Deputies, volunteers, the sheriff’s dive team, a California Highway Patrol helicopter, the Army Corps of Engineers Rangers, Cal Fire and ambulance personnel all joined in the search, the sheriff’s office said.

The girl was found about 25 yards off the shore and in the water, deputies said. Rescuers attempted life-saving measures but she was pronounced dead at the scene.

“The Madera County Sheriff’s Office extends their deepest condolences to her family following this heartbreaking incident,” the office said in a Facebook post.
