Coroner identifies pedestrian struck and killed by train in Merced
The Merced County Sheriff Coroner’s Office has identified a pedestrian struck and killed by a train in Merced on Sunday, as 41-year-old Ramiro Ezequiel Gutierrez, according to Deputy Michael Domingue.
Merced police officers responded to the area V Street and 15th Street just after 9 a.m., when the operator of a freight train reported the incident to authorities. Gutierrez was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to police, the freight train was traveling westbound through Merced on the Union Pacific Railroad tracks at the time of the collision. Authorities said it is unclear what the pedestrian was doing on the tracks at the time of the incident, which is being investigated by the Union Pacific railroad police.
