Authorities identify man struck and killed by train in Merced County

The Merced County Sheriff Coroner’s Office has released the identity of a pedestrian who was struck and killed by a passenger train in Merced County over the weekend as 39-year-old Christopher Moore of Winton, according to Merced County Deputy Michael Domingue.

Deputies responded just after 11 p.m. Sunday to a report of a pedestrian struck by a train in the area of Winton Way and Santa Fe Drive. According to Domingue, an Amtrak train was traveling along the tracks toward Sacramento when the accident occurred.

Authorities said that according to witness statements, the man may have been trying to run across the railroad tracks at the time of the accident. Domingue said the Amtrak Police Department is investigating.
