The National Weather Service issued a freeze warning on Monday for much of Northern California, predicting chilly conditions and patches of frost.
Merced has a 14% probability of seeing temperatures of 32 degrees or lower, the weather agency said.
“Frost and freeze conditions could kill crops, other sensitive vegetation and possibly damage unprotected outdoor plumbing,” the weather service said in its freeze warning.
Here’s what you need to know
When is freeze warning in effect?
The freeze warning will remain in effect from 10 p.m. Monday, Nov. 18, to 10 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 19, according to the National Weather Service said.
Temperatures will remain cool as an atmospheric river-fueled storm rolls across the area, the agency said.
Which areas could see freezing temperatures?
According to the weather service, the freeze warning will affect rural areas of the San Joaquin Valley and other parts of Northern California.
That includes the cities of Merced, Madera, Kettleman City, Lemoore, Tulare and Visalia.
“Sub-freezing temperatures as low as 30 degrees” are expected, the weather service said.
How can I prepare for cold weather in Merced?
Ready.gov, a government resource that helps people prepare for emergencies and natural disasters, has tips on how to brace for the cold:
- Install and test smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors
- Gather supplies in case of a power outage
- Do not heat your home with a gas stove or oven as there is a risk of carbon monoxide poisoning
- Avoid driving in dangerous conditions, if possible, and limit time outdoors.
- If you need to be outside, wear warm clothes and be aware of frostbite and hypothermia symptoms
- Keep a full tank of gas
You should also create an emergency supply kit for your home, car and workplace, according to Ready.gov. It should include jumper cables, water, blankets, non-perishable foods and flashlights.
