‘Pop-cultured’ books

Merced’s Barnes & Noble plans its Get Pop-cultured event 7 p.m. Friday for the Dr. Seuss Spectacular. The day includes special offers, activities and giveaways at the 1720 W. Olive Ave. in Merced. For more, call 209-386-0571.

Charity ball planned

The Owl Empire of Stanislaus County, a nonprofit that hosts LGBT charity events, plans the ICP Ball 41 at 6 p.m. Saturday at the Merced Multicultural Arts Center, 645 W. Main St. in Merced. The fundraiser is themed “Casino Royale: A Night of Gowns, Crowns and Royalty.” Doors open at 5 p.m. before the dinner and show. Pre-sale tickets are $15. Gospel country music

Playhouse gala

“A Night at the Opry” is the theme of Playhouse Merced’s largest fundraiser of the year, supporting the theater’s diverse community programs. The gala will be from 6:30 to 11 p.m. Aug. 15 in Bob Hart Square in downtown Merced. Tickets are $75 each, a table of eight costs $750, and a table of eight VIPs is $1,000. Beach Boys tribute

Beach Boys cover band Mike Amaral’s California Beach Boys will perform the hits of the surf quintet at 7 p.m. Saturday at Merced Theatre, 301 W. Main St. Tickets are $25-$30. For more information, visit tickets.mercedtheatre.org.

Broadway-style show

The Young Artists Conservatory plans to perform “Thoroughly Modern Millie Jr.,” based on the new Broadway musical that is a high-spirited romp through 1922 New York, several times during the weekend: 7:30 p.m. Friday, 7:30 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday at Playhouse Merced, 452 W. South Pacific dance lessons
