An eight-month old died Tuesday night following a two-vehicle crash in Merced County.

The California Highway Patrol said the crash occurred at 8:30 p.m. on Vincent Road, north of Harding Road.

CHP said a 20-year old man was driving a Honda Civic southbound on Vincent Road, north of Harding Road at an unknown speed, while a 43-year-old woman was coming from northbound on Vincent, north of Harding in her Toyota Highlander.

The Honda traveled into the west shoulder of Vincent before veering in an easterly direction and traveled into the opposite lane of traffic.

Both vehicles collided head-on, CHP said. After the impact, the Honda continued in the easterly direction and crashed into a wrought iron fence.

The Toyota blocked both lanes of Vincent Road.

The driver and the right front passenger of the Honda had major injuries. The baby was taken to a local hospital where she was later pronounced dead, CHP said.

The driver of the Toyota was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

It is not known if alcohol or drugs was a factor.
