Will it rain in Merced on Christmas?
Area residents are curious to learn the answer as the holiday approaches.
According to the National Weather Service, a quarter-inch or more of rain is likely on Tuesday, Dec. 24, for Christmas Eve.
Merced has a 66% chance of showers for that day.
“In addition to a favorable chance for rainfall across the valley areas next Tuesday, snowfall will be likely in the Sierra Nevada above 7,000 feet, ” the weather service posted on X.

What’s the latest weather forecast for Merced?
According to the National Weather Service’s latest seven-day forecast, Merced will be cloudy on Friday, with a high temperature near 62 degrees and calm winds becoming south-southeast around 5 mph.
The temperature will drop to a low of 43 degrees on Friday night with calm winds and patchy fog.
Saturday will be partly sunny, with a high near 64 and wind gusts around 5 mph.
When will rain in Merced begin?
Showers will start Saturday night, with a 30% chance of rain after 4 a.m. The low will be around 51.
Sunday morning will also bring rain.
There is a 40% chance of rain before 10 a.m., and patchy fog is expected before 11 a.m., the weather service said. The high will be near 64, and winds will be around 5 mph.
Fog and clouds are expected Sunday night, when the low will be around 49.
Showers will be back on Monday night.
“There’s an 80% chance on Monday night of rain,” said Brian Ochs, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Hanford.
Merced will see patchy fog between 9 and 10 p.m.
The low will be around 51.
New precipitation amounts of less than a 10th of an inch are possible that day, according to the weather service.
Will it rain on Christmas Eve? How about Christmas Day?
Showers will continue on Tuesday, Christmas Eve, with a 90% chance of precipitation.
The storm is expected to bring between a quarter and half of an inch of rain.
Showers will be mainly before 4 p.m., and wind gusts will be as high as 10 mph, the weather service said.
The high on Tuesday will be around 60 and the overnight low will be 42, Ochs said.
Tuesday night will have a 30% chance of rain before 10 p.m. and winds around 5 mph.
On Wednesday, Christmas Day, will be sunny, with a high of around 56 and a low of around 43.
Showers will be back on Thursday, with a 50% chance of rain. The high will reach 55.
How much rain has fallen in December so far?
According to the National Weather Service, the Merced area has experienced temperatures two to four degrees above normal so far in December.
David Spector, a weather service meteorologist, said Merced has experienced a drier than normal December.
“The total rainfall totals for the month of December were 51 hundreths,” Spector said.
According to the National Weather Service, the Merced area experienced a wetter-than-average November.
For the time period of Nov. 25 through Nov. 30, Merced was about 80% to 110% over the monthly normal amount of precipitation, weather service meteorologist Mikal Montgomery said.
“Last year was a bit drier,” Montgomery said.
