Sneaker and collectible shop opens new location in Marketplace at Merced
Shoppers in search of collectibles, designer clothing and limited-edition sneakers can find all three at this Merced store’s new location inside the Marketplace at Merced.
The Come Up Kickz, previously located on Main Street, has opened its new location near the mall’s food court. Owner Abraham Vasquez, 24, of Madera, ssaid the move was driven largely by the need for better security and peace of mind, citing past break-ins and robberies as a significant source of stress at the previous location.
“Here we finally feel at peace,” he said.
Vasquez, a business student who attended Simpson University before transferring to Merced College, said he’s nearing the completion of his studies.
Since opening the new location, Vasquez said they have received positive support from the community. During the grand opening, he said the store gave away approximately $500 worth of items, including a BackBone gaming mobile controller and Nike Retro Four sneakers. Vasquez emphasized the importance of creating connections and making people happy.
“We get blessed, and we hope at the end of the day, like seeing the people smile is like my favorite thing,” he said. “For them to leave happy, even if they don’t buy nothing.”
The name for the business came from the experience of working in fields while growing up and seeing people struggle. He and his business partner settled on the name as a representation of their personal journeys.
In addition to selling sneakers and collectibles, The Come Up Kickz also buys and trades merchandise. Vasquez said client interaction is important and a goal is to make sure clients are satisfied. This is achieved by offering a personalized shopping experience and allowing customers to view exclusive items. Vasquez encourages anyone looking to sell collectibles, such as Pokémon, sneakers and designer items, to reach out to the store.
“We want to make sure that you guys be satisfied,” said Vasquez. “Even if you guys don’t buy nothing, you know, you guys can at least see like the high end items. You guys can see exclusive stuff that we have.”
The business is also committed to local engagement. Vasquez said he collaborates with a Merced youth program, employing local young people and helping them get workforce experience.
“To see them from the first day, to the day that we hire them on or the day they leave to another job, it’s like seeing them grow up like our family so that’s what we’re here for. We’re here for the community and just love to give back,” he said.
With the new location up and running, Vasquez said he has plans to make some changes to the store and by the time the holidays come around, the location may look different. Vasquez said he will also be working to bring events to the store while supporting local artists. One such event that Vasquez is bringing to the Madera store location, is a meet and greet with Red Ranger Steve Cardenas from the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. Vasquez said that event is scheduled to take place at the Madera location on July 19.
The Merced location is open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday.
“We just want to thank the community for the love and support,” said Vasquez.
