The Merced County Coroner’s Office identified two sisters killed in a crash Sunday night as Arianna Valencia, 20, and Camilla Valencia, 3, of Winton.

Moises Haven Castillo, 19, of Catheys Valley, was speeding eastbound on Southern Pacific Avenue in Atwater in a 2005 Chevrolet Silverado, officers said.

Castillo approached the stop sign at Commerce Avenue. A 17-year-old in a 2025 Honda Civic who had been westbound on Southern Pacific Avenue also stopped at Commerce.

When the Honda turned left onto southbound Commence, Castillo ran the stop sign, and the front of his pickup crashed into the passenger side of the Honda, CHP said.

CHP said the impact ripped off the front and rear passenger-side doors of the Honda, causing Arianna Valencia to be ejected from the car. CHP also said that the driver and an and 18-year-old right front passenger got out of the car to help the sisters.

Officers performed CPR, but Arianna Valencia died at the scene. Camilla Valencia was pronounced dead at Mercy Medical Center in Merced.

Castillo got out of the truck and tried to run off but was apprehended. He was arrested on suspicion of DUI and charged with felony hit and run and vehicular manslaughter.

The two teens in the Honda had minor injuries but declined treatment, CHP said.

A GoFundMe account has been set up to help the family with funeral expenses.
