In celebration of Independence Day, Merced-area businesses and services — from grocery stores to government offices — are closing on Friday, July 4, or switching to special hours.

Which holidays affect trash pickup in Merced in 2025?
According to the city of Merced, certain holidays can delay garbage pickup.
Merced County Regional Waste Authority operates two local landfills: Billy Wright Landfill, 17173 South Billy Wright Road in Los Banos, and Highway 59 Landfill, 7040 North Highway 59 in Merced.
According to the county agency, the landfills are closed on Sundays and the following holidays in 2025:
- New Year’s Day
- Martin Luther King, Jr. Day
- Presidents Day
- Memorial Day
- Independence Day
- Labor Day
- Veterans Day
- Thanksgiving Day
- Christmas Day
“When the landfill is closed for a holiday, refuse service will be delayed one business day following the holiday,” the city said on its website.
Does Fourth of July affect waste collection in Merced County?
Mid Valley Disposal provides trash, recycling and organic waste services for the cities of Atwater, Dos Palos, Gustine and Los Banos, according to Merced County Regional Waste Authority.
Mid Valley Disposal is closed on the following holidays:
- New Year’s Day
- Thanksgiving Day
- Christmas Day
“If one of these holidays fall on Monday through Friday, collection services will be delayed one day the remainder of the week,” the waste collection company said.
Gilton Solid Waste Management, which serves Livingston residents, observes a total of five holidays:
- New Year’s Day
- Easter
- Independence Day
- Thanksgiving Day
- Christmas Day
“Holidays that land on a weekday push our residential and commercial pickup schedules back one day with regular schedules resuming the following week,” the company said.
Waste Management Inc. provides garbage collection services for unincorporated areas of Merced County, including Ballico, Cressey, Delhi, Santa Nella and Winton.
The waste collection company closes for a number of holidays, including Independence Day.
When the holiday falls on a weekday, collections for the rest of the week are pushed back by a day.
Will my garbage, recycling be picked up on Independence Day?
In 2025, Independence Day falls on Friday, July 4.
That means waste collection services will be delayed by a day for customers of Merced County Regional Waste Authority, Gilton Solid Waste Management and Waste Management Inc.
In other words, if your garbage and recycling cans are normally collected on Friday, don’t expect to see the garbage truck on that day.
Instead, trash pickup will be rescheduled for Saturday, July 5.
