A pedestrian was killed on Friday when he attempted to cross Highway 99 in Merced County.

The California Highway Patrol responded to the scene at 7:42 a.m. at Highway 99, just south of the Atwater-Merced Expressway in Atwater. Officers found the pedestrian lying on the highway.

The pedestrian was airlifted to Memorial Medical Center in Modesto where he was later pronounced dead.

CHP said a 45-year-old man was driving a 2017 Nissan sedan northbound on Highway 99, south of the Atwater-Merced Expressway in the No. 1 lane at approximately 65 mph.

For unknown reason, an unknown man was attempting to cross the highway in a westerly direction. The driver was unable to see the pedestrian due to the man suddenly jumping in the lane of traffic, according to CHP. The pedestrian was propelled to the center median.

The driver remained at the scene and was cooperative. The driver was not determined to be under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.
