Is Costco open for Labor Day? Target? See holiday hours for Merced-area stores
Labor Day 2025 is Monday, Sept. 1.
Whether you’re planning a weekend getaway or running errands on your day off, be aware some Merced-area stores will close their doors or shorten their hours in observance of the holiday.
The Merced Sun-Star reached out to local businesses and services to find out how Labor Day will affect their hours.
Below is a list of Merced-area businesses and whether they’ll be open or closed on Monday.
Hours can vary by location, so be sure to check with your local store before heading out.
Which Merced-area grocery stores are open on Labor Day?
The Merced area is home to a variety of grocery stores, supermarkets and other retailers.
Here are the major chains that will be open or closed Monday, Sept. 1, for the holiday:
- Cardenas Markets: Open 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.
- Costco: Closed.
- Dollar General Market: Open 7 a.m. to midnight.
- Food 4 Less: Open 5 a.m. to midnight.
- FoodMaxx: Open 6 a.m. to midnight.
- Grocery Outlet: Open 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.
- Raley’s: Open 6 a.m. to 11 p.m
- Rancho San Miguel Markets: Open 5 a.m. to 10 p.m.
- Save Mart: Open 6 a.m. to 11 p.m.
- Smart and Final: Open 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.
- Sprouts Farmers Market: Open 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.
- Target: Open 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.
- US Foods Chef’Store: Open 6 a.m. to 5 p.m.
- Walmart: Open 6 a.m. to 11 p.m.
Is the Merced mall open on Labor Day?
Most stores inside the Marketplace at Merced shopping center will be open 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday for Labor Day.
However, individual restaurants and retailers may have different hours, so it’s best to contact them directly.
Are local pharmacies open on Labor Day?
Here’s how Labor Day will affect hours at local pharmacies and drugstores on Monday, Sept. 1:
- CVS: Store open from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.; pharmacy open 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
- Walgreens: Store open 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.; pharmacy closed.
Will trash be picked up on Labor Day?
According to the city of Merced, certain holidays can delay garbage pickup.
Merced County Regional Waste Authority operates two local landfills: Billy Wright Landfill, 17173 South Billy Wright Road in Los Banos, and Highway 59 Landfill, 7040 North Highway 59 in Merced.
According to the county agency, the landfills are closed on Sundays and the following holidays:
- New Year’s Day
- Martin Luther King, Jr. Day
- Presidents Day
- Memorial Day
- Independence Day
- Labor Day
- Veterans Day
- Thanksgiving Day
- Christmas Day
Trash will not be picked up on Monday, Sept. 1, due to the Labor Day holiday.
“When the landfill is closed for a holiday, refuse service will be delayed one business day following the holiday,” the city said on its website.
What’s closed on Labor Day in Merced?
Government offices, including the California Department of Motor Vehicles, U.S. Postal Service and public libraries will be closed on Monday, Sept. 1, as well as most banks.
Package delivery companies including FedEx and UPS will be closed for the holiday.
