Merced police warn about warming up your car unattended

As the weather gets colder, some Merced residents may be tempted to warm up their car, truck or SUV while leaving it unattended.

Merced police provided a warning about doing that as they see an increase in vehicle thefts this time of year.

“Thieves are always on the lookout for easy opportunities, and a running, unlocked vehicle is an open invitation,” Merced Police Department said in a Facebook post on Wednesday.

Police provided these tips:

  • Never leave your car running and unattended, even for a quick errand.
  • Use a remote start system if your vehicle is equipped with one—these systems keep your doors locked.
  • Always lock your doors and close all windows before leaving your vehicle.
  • Never leave your keys, key fob, or valuables inside your car.
  • Park in well-lit areas or inside a garage whenever possible.
