Run out of eggnog for your holiday gathering? Need a last-minute gift?

Before heading out on Christmas, it’s worth checking local store hours. Many Merced-area businesses will be closed or operating on limited schedules on the holiday.

The Merced Sun-Star contacted local businesses to find out how Christmas Eve and Christmas Day in 2025 will affect store and service hours.

Below is a list of what will be open or closed in Merced County on Wednesday, Dec. 24, and Thursday, Dec. 25.

Keep in mind that hours can vary by location, so it’s best to confirm with your local store before you go.

When are Merced grocery stores are open on Christmas?

The Merced area is home to a variety of grocery stores, supermarkets and other retailers.

Here’s when major retail chains will be open on Wednesday, Dec. 24, and Thursday, Dec. 25, and which ones will close:

  • Cardenas Markets: Open 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Christmas Eve; open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Christmas Day.
  • Costco: Open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Christmas Eve; closed Christmas Day.
  • Food 4 Less: Open 5 a.m. to 8 p.m. Christmas Eve; closed Christmas Day.
  • FoodMaxx: Open 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Christmas Eve; closed Christmas Day.
  • Grocery Outlet: Open 7:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Christmas Eve; closed Christmas Day.
  • Raley’s: Open 6 a.m. to 7 pm. Christmas Eve; closed Christmas Day.
  • Save Mart: Open 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Christmas Eve; open 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Christmas Day.
  • Smart and Final: Open 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Christmas Eve; closed Christmas Day.
  • Sprouts: Open 7 a.m to 7 p.m. Christmas Eve; closed Christmas Day.
  • Target: Open 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Christmas Eve; closed Christmas Day.
  • US Foods Chef’Store: Open 6 a.m. to 1 p.m. Christmas Eve; closed Christmas Day.
  • Walmart: Open 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Christmas Eve; closed Christmas Day.

Is the Merced mall open on Christmas?

The Marketplace at Merced shopping center will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Christmas Eve.

The mall will be closed on Christmas Day, Dec. 25.

Individual restaurants and retailers may have different hours, so it’s best to contact them directly.

Are local pharmacies open on Christmas?

Holiday hours will impact local pharmacies and drugstores on both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

On Christmas Eve, Wednesday, Dec. 24, CVS Pharmacy will be open from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., with pharmacy services available from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

CVS will be open 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Christmas Day — Thursday, Dec. 25 — but the pharmacy counters will be closed.

Walgreens will also operate on reduced hours.

On Christmas Eve, Walgreens will be open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., with the pharmacy open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

You can shop at Walgreens store from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Christmas Day, although pharmacy services won’t be available.

What’s closed on Christmas Day in Merced?

Most government offices in Merced, including the California Department of Motor Vehicles, U.S. Postal Service and public libraries, will be closed on Christmas Day.

Most banks will also be closed for the holiday.

On Christmas Eve, some businesses and services will operate on reduced hours.

The DMV will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., while USPS offices will close at 12:30 p.m. Public libraries will close at 5 p.m.

Package delivery companies, including FedEx and UPS, will operate on modified hours on Christmas Eve and will not deliver on Christmas Day.
