A driver crashed into a horse in Merced County while driving in dense fog early Friday morning, California Highway Patrol Merced said.

The horse died and the driver’s vehicle was badly damaged.

The driver was going 50 mph in about 50 feet of visibility due to the thick tule fog, according to a CHP Merced Facebook post.

The driver encountered two horses in the roadway while travelling on Bloss Road in Delhi. The second horse was not injured. The CHP post does not indicate the driver was hurt.

“This is a tough reminder that in fog, your speed has to match what you can actually see,” the CHP said in the post. “When visibility is limited, unexpected hazards can appear with no warning, including stalled vehicles, pedestrians, debris, and animals in the roadway.”

The National Weather Service issued a dense fog advisory at 12:46 a.m. Friday.
