Two children, ages 5 and 2, are in stable but critical condition in a Madera hospital after they were hit by a vehicle in Santa Nella on Tuesday, according to California Highway Patrol in Los Banos.

The children were on South Venus Street in Santa Nella at around 6 p.m. when they were hit by a 2004 Crown Victoria driven by a 36-year-old Gustine man.

The kids had been playing in their driveway when the saw a neighbor’s dog walking down the street. The children chased after it and were hit by the vehicle, according to CHP Los Banos Officer Shannon Stiers

The driver left the scene of the incident due to personal safety concerns and contacted the CHP in a parking lot about a mile away, Stiers said. The children’s father was threatening the driver after the collision, Stiers said.

The children were taken by a parent to Los Banos Memorial Hospital. Both children suffered serious injuries and were taken from Los Banos Memorial to Valley Children’s Hospital in Madera, the news release said.

Alcohol or drugs were not a factor in this crash, CHP said.
