Residents in Gustine will notice loud cannon noises over the next few weeks, according to local police.

The “sound cannons” are part of the city’s plan to address seasonal activity from cattle egrets in parks, particularly around Harry Schmidt Park, located on Highway 33.

According to www.allaboutbirds.org, the cattle egret is a short, thick-necked bird that spends most of its time in fields rather than streams.

It forages at the feet of grazing cattle, thus earning its name.

While these birds are protected under federal law, their presence can create health concerns due to droppings in high-use areas, according to a Gustine Police Department Facebook post.

The city will also be trimming trees at Schmidt Park to discourage the birds from building nests.

The post reminded residents not to approach or disturb birds in their nest.
