Bicyclist killed when struck by car in Merced County, CHP says
A bicyclist was hit and killed by a vehicle in Merced County on Thursday morning, according to a California Highway Patrol news release.
The collision occurred at about 4:50 a.m. when a person driving a 2006 Honda Civic overtook another vehicle westbound on Santa Fe Avenue, east of Mercedes Drive.
As the Honda merged back into its lane, the driver saw the bicyclist crossing Santa Fe. The driver slammed on the brakes but was unable to avoid hitting the bicyclist, CHP said.
The driver immediately pulled over and called 911. Despite emergency medical aid, the bicyclist, identified as a man in his 50s, died at the scene.
Drugs and/or alcohol do not appear to be factors in this crash, CHP said.
The collision is still under investigation. CHP Merced is asking anyone who witnessed this crash or has information related to it to contact Officer C. Williams at 209-356-6600.
