Merced County DA’s Office has a new team member. He’ll work for treats

The Merced County district attorney has a new team member, and while he doesn’t have a law degree, he is specially trained for his new role.

The DA’s Office swore in Parker, a golden retriever, as its new victim services facility support dog this week.

Parker will assist crime victims and witnesses during interviews and courtroom testimony, the DA said in a Facebook post.

Parker’s primary handler will be Veronica Damian, a victims advocate with the DA’s Office.

“Parker’s job, and we know he will do it well, is to comfort and support victims and survivors through the most difficult moments in their life,” Merced County DA Nicole Silveira said in a swearing-in ceremony. “We’re especially grateful for the support Parker will provide to our child victims.”

Some of Merced County’s other K9s and their handlers were there in support of Damian and Parker.

According to assistancedogsinternational.org, “courthouse dogs” provide the following:

  • Reducing anxiety: The courtroom can be an intimidating place, especially for those who have experienced trauma. The comforting presence of a dog can help reduce fear, stress and anxiety.
  • Encouraging communication: For kids, having a dog present may encourage them to express their feelings and thoughts more freely.
  • Better testimony: By providing a calming influence, witnesses can feel safe and supported. They are more likely to provide accurate and complete testimonies.
  • Building trust: The bond between a person and a dog can create a sense of security, allowing individuals to trust their environment and the people within it.
