Before heading out for barbecue supplies, last-minute errands or holiday shopping, you’ll want to check store hours.
While many grocery stores, pharmacies and major retailers plan to remain open on Independence Day, some businesses, banks and government offices will close or operate on reduced hours in observance of the holiday.
The Merced Sun-Star contacted local businesses to find out how the Fourth of July will affect store hours across the region.

When are Merced grocery stores open on July 4?
The Merced area is home to a variety of grocery stores, supermarkets and other retailers.
Store hours can vary by location, so be sure to call ahead or check the store’s website.
Here’s when local supermarkets and other retailers will be open on Saturday, July 4, for Independence Day and which will be closed:
- Cardenas Markets: Open 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.
- Costco Wholesale: Closed.
- Food 4 Less: Open 5 a.m. to midnight.
- FoodMaxx: Open 6 a.m. to midnight.
- Grocery Outlet: Open 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.
- Raley’s: Open 6 a.m. to 11 p.m.
- Save Mart: Open 6 a.m. to midnight.
- Smart and Final: Open 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.
- Sprouts: Open 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.
- Target: Open 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.
- US Foods Chef’Store: Open 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.
- Vallarta Supermarkets: Open 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
- Walmart: Open 6 a.m. to 11 p.m.
Is the Merced mall open on Fourth of July 2026?
The Marketplace at Merced will be open for Independence Day on Saturday, July 4.
While individual restaurants and retailers can have different hours, the mall will operate from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Are local pharmacies open for Independence Day?
If you need to pick up a prescription or stop by the drugstore on Independence Day, here’s when to go:
- CVS: Store open 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.; pharmacy open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
- Walgreens: Store open 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.; pharmacy open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Store hours vary on location. Be sure to call ahead before your visit.
What’s closed on July 4 in the Merced area?
Most government offices in Merced County will be closed on Saturday, July 4, in observance of Independence Day, including the California Department of Motor Vehicles, U.S. Postal Service and public libraries.
Before the holiday, the Merced DMV will operate during its regular hours, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, July 3.
Post offices will also be open Friday, with normal mail delivery service.
Merced County libraries will maintain their regular operating hours.
Most banks will be open Friday but closed on the Fourth of July. However, hours can vary by location.
Package delivery services will also adjust their schedules for the holiday.
FedEx and UPS locations might have modified hours on Friday. Packages will not be delivered on Saturday, July 4.
