Merced County gasoline prices averaged $5.40 per gallon in the latest survey by AAA. The July 13 figure was down 2 cents from a week earlier and 50 cents from a month ago.

The cheapest of the stations in the latest GasBuddy.com report was $4.69 a gallon at Diamond Gas and Market in Merced. The survey is for regular-grade fuel.

Prices had surged in Merced County and beyond with the war in Iran earlier this year. The local average was $4.38 a gallon a year ago.

Gasbuddy’s latest nationwide average is $3.82 a gallon, the first uptick in eight weeks. It was 71 cents lower than July 2025.

California has a fuel tax of $63.4 cents, spent on road and transit improvements. Other fees go to various clean-air efforts.

Gas prices could rise again this week as U.S.-Iran ceasefire appears to have stopped and disruptions at the Strait of Hormuz have returned.
