USP Atwater inmate indicted for alleged assault on correctional officer

A 32-year-old inmate at United States Penitentiary Atwater was indicted by a federal grand jury Thursday for allegedly assaulting a correctional officers.

Lafaele Fetalina allegedly punched the on-duty officer and inflicted bodily injuries, according to Lauren Horwood, spokesperson for the U.S. Attorney Benjamin B. Wagner. The incident was investigated by the FBI, and Assistant United States Attorney Yasin Mohammad is prosecuting the case.

If convicted of the assault charges, Fetalina faces a maximum term of 20 years in prison, along with a $250,000 fine. The actual sentence will be determined at the discretion of the court, after consideration of any applicable statutory factors and federal sentencing guidelines, which take several variables into account, according to Horwood.
