Merced reserve officer taken to hospital after traffic collision
A Merced reserve police officer was taken to a hospital with minor injuries Monday after a collision at 13th and R streets, the Police Department confirmed.
Wallace Broughton, 66, was transported to a hospital after complaining of pain, Merced Police Sgt. Jay Struble said.
“He was taken to the hospital as a precaution for a complaint of pain,” Struble told the Sun-Star.
Broughton is a reserve school resource officer who works for the department at Herbert H. Cruickshank Middle School and Rudolph Rivera Middle School, according to police.
According to officers, Broughton was heading east around 10:15 a.m. on 13th Street in Merced. As he turned left onto R Street, another vehicle crashed into the driver’s side of Broughton’s vehicle.
The other driver apparently was in a left-hand-turn lane, but went straight, colliding with Broughton’s vehicle, Struble said.
Officers from the California Highway Patrol are investigating the incident.
The identity of the other driver was not immediately available.
