City starts resurfacing project on downtown parking lots
The city began work on its Downtown Public Parking Improvement Project on Monday, with construction expected to continue for the next six weeks.
The $221,510 project to restore city parking lots will include new pavement-resurfacing in several areas downtown. Construction began on the 18th Street parking lot between M and Canal, behind Toni’s Courtyard Cafe.
Throughout the duration of the project, adjacent streets will remain open to traffic and businesses will be open to customers as usual.
According to city spokesperson Mike Conway, there should be enough adjacent parking for customers and downtown visitation should not be affected. Work duration on each lot will depend on the size, but each one is expected to last no more than a couple of days.
The need to renovate parking lots in the downtown area is something the city has been hearing from residents for some time, Conway said. The city’s Parking Authority and Engineering Department wanted to get the work done before the rainy season.
Renovations also will take place in the following lots:
▪ Parking lot on the corner of 16th and M streets
▪ Parking lot on Martin Luther King Jr. Way and Main Street
▪ Both parking lots on Main Street between K Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Way
▪ Parking lot on the corner of 16th and Canal streets
▪ Parking lot on the corner of K and 18th streets
