Motorcycle hits car, then is struck by train, near Atwater

A motorcyclist suffered a broken leg Tuesday morning after he collided with a truck in the Atwater area, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The crash was reported at 6:08 a.m. in the area of Santa Fe Drive and Shaffer Road, according to Officer Moises Onsurez.

Hector Mendoza, 22, was riding a 1995 Harley-Davidson westbound on Santa Fe Drive, making a turn onto southbound Shaffer Road. While he was turning, Mendoza crashed into a Chevy S10 truck driven by Jorge Pena, 36, traveling northbound on Shaffer Road, at Santa Fe Drive.

Mendoza was injured, and after the crash his motorcycle was left resting on railroad tracks at the intersection. Pena was unhurt. A train traveling eastbound then struck the motorcycle. Onsurez said Mendoza was not on the motorcycle when the train struck it.

Mendoza was taken to a hospital for treatment. After the crash, the train blocked the intersection of Santa Fe Drive and Shaffer Road until a crew could inspect the tracks.

The CHP is investigating.
