Arts Wrap for Oct. 9, 2015
Second Saturdays
Second Saturdays, a cooperative effort between the Merced County Arts Council and the county Office of Education, starts in October. It continues in November, and then January through May at the council’s Black Box Theatre, 645 W. Main St. The program is open to children ages 3 to 8. Admission is $3 per child, with no charge for adults. First show is this Saturday, when Merced College music professor Allan Spencer and the NLD Acoustic Band will perform children’s pop songs. ‘La Loteria’
Mariposa Art Company plans “La Loteria,” a group art exhibition featuring 42 different Central Valley artists at 8 p.m. Oct. 17 at the gallery at 1637 M St. in Merced. Artists have created original works based on cards from Loteria, a popular game played throughout Mexico. The event is for all ages and is free. For more, visit www.mariposaartcompany.com.
LB concert series
The 2015-16 Los Banos Arts Council Concert Series features Adrian, a.k.a. “The Buckaroogirl,” a singer-songwriter who writes about growing up on ranches in the American West. Fundraiser luau
A fundraiser for the Merced County Arts Council and the Multicultural Arts Center called “Luau at the Lake” begins at 5:30 p.m. Friday at Lake Yosemite’s Rotary Cove. Tickets are $35 each, and reserved tables are available. Call 209-388-1090 or email director@artsmerced.org.
Oscar Wilde on tap

Mexican folk art
Mariposa Art Company is set to host a free workshop from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Oct. 15 at the gallery at 1637 M St. in Merced. The workshop is on Mexican folk art styles called papel picado and cempazuchitl flowers, which are commonly used to decorate for Day of the Dead festivities. It is for all ages. Beatles tribute

‘Selfish Giant’
Building Young Leaders, an education enrichment center in Merced, plans a performance with a cast of about 100 children, including actors, dancers and a chorus, of “The Selfish Giant,” a musical adaptation of Oscar Wilde’s classic tale. A free school performance is scheduled at 9 a.m. Nov. 6, at the Merced Theatre, 301 W. Main St. There is another the same day. Tickets are $12. Petty Fever band
