Cannella to serve on state Senate’s Rules Committee

State Sen. Anthony Cannella, R-Merced, was elected to the Senate Committee on Rules after his swearing-in ceremony Monday.

“I am both humbled and honored to receive the support and confidence from my fellow lawmakers,” Cannella said in a news release. “I look forward to working with committee members to ensure the business and rules of the house are efficient and always in the public’s best interests.”

The Senate Rules Committee is responsible for day-to-day Senate operations, as well as investigating proposed amendments to the rules relating to the business of the Legislature.

Cannella recently hired Brett Michelin as his new chief of staff. Michelin’s first day on the job was Monday, according to a news release.

“As I begin my second term, I’m extremely happy to have someone with Brett’s vast and diverse experience on my team,” Cannella said in the release. “His strong leadership and advisory abilities will be incredibly helpful for me and my staff for the next four years, and I am confident his strong record of working in both public policy and state government will be invaluable to the 12th Senate District.”

Michelin is a state Capitol veteran with more than 20 years of experience in public policy and politics, according to the release. He has served in various staff positions for four Assembly members, including former Assemblyman George House, R-Hughson.

Michelin also served as chief of staff in the state Senate from 2002 to 2004. He subsequently became a legislative advocate for the California Medical Association, one of the largest professional trade associations in the state.

Last month, Cannella defeated Democratic challenger Shawn Bagley, receiving roughly 62 percent of the vote. The 12th Senate District stretches across six counties and includes west Modesto, Ceres, Merced, Patterson, Newman, Los Banos and Salinas.
