Frida Kahlo show in Fresno

Here’s a sneak peek: The Fresno Art Museum hopes an anticipated show featuring one of the big names of the art world will spur excitement in its upcoming winter/spring exhibitions.

In 1931, Frida Kahlo began a romance with photographer Nickolas Muray that lasted, off and on, for 10 years. Their friendship lasted until the end of their lives. Through it all, the Hungarian-born Muray, a pioneer in color photography, took images of Kahlo.

Fifty of those photographs make up the traveling exhibition “Frida Kahlo: Through the Lens of Nickolas Muray,” which opens Jan. 22 at the museum. The show is presented through the support of the McClatchy Fresno Arts Endowment.

“We’re really trying to use this as a calling-card show,” says Michele Ellis Pracy, the museum’s executive director and chief curator.

The winter-spring lineup also includes “Body/Land: A 25 Year Retrospective of Anne Scheid” (coordinated with shows at ArtSpace Gallery at Fresno City College and Arte Américas), “Sonia Romero: Printmaker,” “Richard J. Freitas: Promise Land” and “RAD Fresno State Women.”
