Winton man hospitalized after wreck

A 23-year-old Winton man suffered major injuries early Thursday when his car struck an almond tree east of Livingston, the California Highway Patrol reported.

Joshua Coronado was in his vehicle for an undetermined amount of time after the crash before a passing motorist spotted the wreck and called for assistance, the CHP said in a news release.

The crash occurred “some time before” 1 a.m. on Walnut Avenue, west of Sultana Drive, in rural Merced County. Investigators said Coronado was heading west on Walnut in a 1996 Dodge Neon.

His vehicle left the roadway, crashed into an almond tree and spun before it wrapped itself around a second tree in the orchard, officers said.

Firefighters from Livingston and the Department of Forestry and Fire Protection removed Coronado from his car. He was taken to Doctors Medical Center in Modesto with several broken bones, including his clavicle, shoulder and leg.

The cause of the collision was unclear and remained under investigation Wednesday afternoon.
