The lesser known story of Alice and her adventures in Wonderland provides the scene for the next production from Playhouse Merced.

“Through the Looking Glass” has Alice on her second set of adventures in the musical adaptation of the Lewis Carroll classic and follow-up to “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.”

The production premieres at 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 4, at the Playhouse, 452 W. Main St. It runs each weekend through March 27.

Alice meets the Red Queen, the White Knight, Humpty Dumpty, Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum, and the Jabberwocky.

The story is set about six months after the earlier novel. Alice enters a fantastical world, this time by climbing through a mirror into the scenes that she can see beyond it.

Director Corey Strauss said the story is similar to the adventures Alice has in her first visit to Wonderland, but it’s treated as though she’s never been. It’s a sort of re-imagining.

The story deals with adolescence, bravery, fear and aging out of childhood. “All things that as an 11-year-old you’d have to be aware of,” Strauss said.

Alice is played by Madison Mitchell, while the White and Red Knights are portrayed by RC Essig and Travis Walsh, respectively. Dianne Kocher is the Red Queen and Bethy Harmelin is the White Queen. Twins Rob and Joe Hypes play Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum. The musical director is Darrel Lingenfelter.

Tickets prices are $10 for students, and $15 to $22 depending on section. They are sold online at playhousemerced.com, or available by calling 209-725-8587.
