The melodramatic story of a gunslinger and a mustachioed villain plays out like every dime novel ever written in the latest from Playhouse Merced.

“Deadwood Dick, or Game of Gold” premieres at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 8, on the Playhouse stage, 452 W. Main St.

The play draws its source material from author Edward L. Wheeler, who spun the tales of a sort of Robin Hood of the Old West. Merced’s version is written by Shawn Overton, a Merced-based playwright and Mariposa High graduate.

Directed by Sheila Noel, the play features Chris Battisti as the title character, and Bernadette Mello dons the hat and holster of Calamity Jane. Villainous Maleficio Montjoy is played by Stephen Mouillesseaux, while Chrysanthemum Rose is portrayed by Melissa Beckwith.

“Deadwood” plays for two weekends, through Sunday, April 17. Tickets are $10 for students, and $15 to $22 depending on section. Merced’s play is rated appropriate for all ages.

Tickets are available online at www.playhousemerced.com, by calling 209-725-8587 or at the box office.
