South Pacific dance lessons
The South Pacific Dance Company is teaching traditional dance and music from the cultures of Hawaii and Tahiti. The school is now enrolling for the spring semester, ages 4 and older, beginners through advanced. Classes are held at Creation Station, 2408 Martin Luther King Jr. Way. In addition, the Soul Power Dance Crew is now taking enrollment for an eight-week session in hip-hop dance for ages 7 through teens. ‘Penzance‘ at Playhouse Merced
“The Pirates of Penzance” plays weekends through Feb. 1 at Playhouse Merced. Tickets are on sale for Friday and Saturday performances at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday matinees at 2 p.m. Purchase tickets by going to www.facebook.com/PlayhouseMerced.
Winter Pops Concert
The Merced Symphony Winter Pops Concert is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Jan. 30 at the Merced Theatre. The concert will feature movie themes and classics with a Western flavor. The theater is at 301 W. Photography classes
Jay Sousa is offering is “Digital Camera Basics” at Merced College starting this Saturday and running three consecutive Saturdays from 9 a.m. until noon. Senior center social dance
The January Social Dance will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Merced Senior Community Center, 755 W. 15th St. Doors open at 1 p.m., and there’s a rumba lesson at 1:15 p.m. Cost is $8 per person and refreshments will be available. For more information, call (209) 723-0839.
Merced Camera Club Meets

Exhibits at the Arts Center
The Merced Multicultural Arts Center has opened an exhibit this month titled “Emergency/Emergence: Art After War.” The artists are all Iraq War veterans. A reception is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Feb. 12 at the center, at 645 W. Main St. For more information, visit artsmerced.org.
Museum docent training
The Merced County Courthouse Museum is recruiting volunteers. An annual docent training session is scheduled to start at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Courthouse Museum. Merced College Exhibit
The Merced College Art Gallery this month is presenting an exhibition of paintings, titled “Endure,” by Northern California artist Jay Hill. The gallery is open from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. and from noon to 2 p.m. Monday through Thursday.
Black History Month musical
In recognition of Black History Month, the musical “Crowns” will be performed at the Merced Multicultural Art Center’s Black Box Theater, 645 W. Main St. The show will be performed Feb. 6-16 on Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m and 2 p.m. Sundays. A special fundraiser show for the Merced Boys and Girls Club is also scheduled to be held 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 12. Tickets for the event will be $30 per person or $50 a couple.
